Gina Echeverry was born in Quibdó-Choco, Pacific region of Colombia were the vast majority (82.1%) of the population are Afro-descendants. Gina is an activist who firmly believes that therapy and the arts work together to radically improve our communities and foster resilience. She was the first Afro-Colombian female to study visual arts at the Jorge Tadeo University in Bogotá, Colombia. After moving to Philadelphia in 2000, she found new avenues to pursue her passion of aiding Families and children facing hardship and trauma, where She holds a Master’s degree in Family Therapy from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo in Philadelphia. She holds certifications in structural ecosystem family therapy from the Philadelphia Child and Family Therapy Training Center and cognitive behavioral therapy from the University of Pennsylvania’s Beck Initiative School of Medicine. Licensed by the National Society of America with a certification in trauma and crisis in critical emergency. Pioneer in Philadelphia’s Hispanic Community for the therapeutic use of art. Gina was the founder of Diego Luis Córdoba University’s Fine Arts Program in Colombia. 1999. During her time as the clinical director of the Hispanic Community Counseling Service in Philadelphia, she had the chance to organize, oversee, and manage the Family Therapy Program and the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Program in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania’s BECK initiative.Gina is currently the director and founder of the Sanamente an International Foundation, which helps people with special needs and Afro- Colombians heal from the trauma inflicted by the brutality and war that the armed conflict has placed upon them.
